The tourist hub of Central Australia, Alice Springs has been growing quickly over the past few decades. Now a modern town of 25,000 people, it still retains the presence of its pioneering past. Visit the historic Overland Telegraph Station near the original Alice Spring, a permanent pool in the dry bed of the Todd River to the north of town. There are also a number of other old buildings which have been lovingly preserved near the centre of town. Climb Anzac Hill for a fine panoramic view of the town and the surrounding landscape.

For an even more spectacular view, you can take an early morning ride in a hot air balloon over the MacDonnell Ranges. A major new attraction is the Alice Springs Desert Park, where you can experience the native flora and fauna at close hand, and learn about the ways they are used by the Aboriginal people. The Park is open daily and adult admission costs $12. There are also many Aboriginal art and craft galleries in town, most of which sell the world famous dot paintings of the Western Desert people. As in any major tourist centre there are a wide range of available services, tours, and places to stay. There are regular flights to the major cities for those who don't have the time or inclination for a long road trip.
