arnhem land

Arnhem Land offers a unique cultural and wilderness experience. The spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment, bush and wetland areas have remained virtually untouched by development. As Arnhem Land is Aboriginal land, visitors need a permit and have limited access. It is now possible to visit Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) in the west and Nhulunbuy in the east. There are various art centres throughout Arnhem Land where you can buy indigenous arts and crafts.

The region is also developing a reputation as a premium fishing destination. The easiest way to experience Arnhem Land is to go on an organised tour either from Nhulunbuy or as a combined Kakadu/Arnhem Land tour.

Permits can be obtained from the Northern Land Council in Darwin, Katherine Jabiru and Nhulunbuy. Allow two to four weeks for processing and mail. The only exception for a permit is if you fly into Nhulunbuy on one of the daily services from either Cairns or Darwin, but then you need a permit to explore beyond the town.
