maningrida - bawinanga safaris

Hunt wild asiatic buffalo and wild boar in the spectacular setting of remote Arnhem Land. In the true spirit of "fair chase" hunting BAWINANGA SAFARIS is proud to offer quality hunts of free range wild game. Our hunting concession encompasses a variety of habitats from coastal floodplains, savannah woodlands to rugged sandstone escarpments. The remoteness of the area means that very few people, other than the traditional Aboriginal owners, have enjoyed the privilege of accessing this spectacular wilderness area.

BAWINANGA SAFARIS is a joint venture between the BAWINANGA ABORIGINAL CORPORATION and Wildlife North Australia, a wildlife management company. Having Aboriginal ownership we are in the unique position to offer genuine insight into traditional Aboriginal way of life. The hunts are tailored to suit the individual party. Each hunting party includes an experienced guide and Aboriginal tracker. Your guides are all experienced hunters - they will take care of every detail of your hunt and ensure a game trophy to be proud of. Your trackers are the traditional owners of the land and will keep you fascinated with their skills and tales of the history of the bush.

The BAWINANGA SAFARIS hunting concession encompasses some 5400 square kilometers of varying terrain. Water buffalo are the larest species with wild boar and scrub bull also available.

Apart from the game animals, Arnhem Land supports an amazing variety of facinating wildlife. Kangaroos and wallabies abound, fearsome saltwater crocodiles patrol the rivers, dingoes prowl the savannah, and the abundant birdlife fill the air with songs and chatter.

The area provides an opportunity to photograph the exquisite scenery and abundant wildlife of Arnhem Land and to try your hand at fishing seldom fished remote rivers to hook the famous Top End barramundi.

Magpie geese and a wide variety of duck species can be hunted during the waterfowl season which usually runs between the months of September and December.

The main safari accommodation is the base camp at Djinkarr. The central lodge is where gourmet meals are served as tales of the day's hunt are told. Nestled in the surrounding bush, offering complete quarters - large and luxurious tents each with a complete fitted bathroom with hot water.

Some of the more remote sections of our safari are hunted from fly camps established along scenic water courses. They comprise a large covered mess area with small individual tents nearby.

A short flight from Darwin to Maningrida, an Aboriginal community located on the banks of the remote Liverpool River. Our main safari camp is based at Djinkarr, some 20 kms south-east of Maningrida, overlooking the Tomkinson River.

The "Top End" of Australia has two distinct seasons: the Dry from May to October and the Wet from November until April. The most favourable time for hunting is during the Dry Season when rain is a rarity and the days are warm and free from humidity. The Wet Season offers the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular scenery with thunderous waterfalls and flooded billabongs. Hunting is more of a challenge during this season when game tends to be more widely dispersed.

Aboriginal Culture

Aboriginal people have lived on the banks of the Liverpool River for over 40 000 years. The first contact with outsiders was with Macassan trepang fisherman who began visiting the coast of Australia in the 17th century. No permanent European presence was recorded in the region until 1957 when the community of Maningrida was established. The community today supports a population of over 1300 with some 750 living in small, remote outstation communities. Traditional pursuits of land management, ceremony, language and culture are well maintained throughout the region.
