bungle bungles (purnululu national park)

The highlight for many visitors to the Kimberley region is an encounter with the strange dome-like rock formations known as the Bungle Bungles, located 200 km south of Kununurra. This area was once a limestone massif, but has been eroded and sculpted over millions of years into a multitude of red sandstone domes. Orange and black lichen rings around the domes add extra colour and a touch of the truly bizarre. The Park is 55km off the main highway and access requires a 4WD vehicle. 4WD tours are available from Halls Creek and Kununurra. From the Park boundary it is a further 25 km drive and a short 2 km hike into Cathedral Gorge, where towering rocks enclose a small pool of calm water. Feel the power of silence, or listen to the almighty echo. For the more energetic, an overnight hike to awe-inspiring Picaninny Gorge is recommended. Admission to the Park costs $11 and camping sites are available. The Park is closed in the wet season months from January to March. Throughout the year scenic flights take off from Halls Creek and Kununurra to offer the visitor a chance to see this dramatic lanscape from the air. These flights also take in Lake Argyle, the largest freshwater body in the Southern Hemisphere.
