darwin
Darwin is a cosmopolitan, tropical city situated on the edge of the Arafura
sea in the Top End of the Northern Territory. It is the international
gateway to Australia's Top End and the beautiful National Parks of Litchfield
and Kakadu. The atmosphere is laid back and Darwin is the kind of place
where you can take a cruise on the harbour, go diving, explore the museum
and art gallery ... or just enjoy the local scene of outdoor living, markets,
live bands, walks along the beach and watching the sun set. |

art, culture and entertainment
The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory have collections
ranging from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, to a show case
of the many boats that have travelled the northern waters of Australia.
The museum has an exhibit that takes you through the story of how Cyclone
Tracy devastated Darwin in 1974.
There are numerous other art galleries situated in Darwin that sell and
exhibit the work of both traditional and local artists.
Entertainment ranges from pub bands, to theatre and dance. During the festival
in September, the city comes alive with many outdoor performances and artworks
which celebrate the cultural and artistic diversity of Australia's most northern
city. |

when to visit
Darwin is at its busiest during the dry season months of May to October.
This is the best time to visit if you enjoy warm weather. The wet season
(November - March) is however, a dramatic time to be here. The landscape
is transformed from dry to a lush green, and there are many impressive
electrical storms and downpours of rain. Many people say the wet season
is their favourite part of the year, and there are some tours which operate
during this time. Just remember, it will be raining! A lot! |
