the inland gorges - geikie, windjana and tunnel creek

Approx. 350 million years ago in the Devonian geological period a vast ocean covered most of the Kimberley region. At Geikie Gorge, Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek National Parks you can see the spectacular remnants of an ancient coral reef, thought to be around 1000 km long and more than 20 km wide. Base yourself in the town of Fitzroy Crossing, 390 km east of Broome. From here it is a three-hour drive to Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge, and only 20 minutes to Geikie Gorge. You will need to take a boat cruise down the Fitzroy River in order to see Geikie Gorge. The banks lined with red river gums are wildlife sanctuaries and off-limits to tourists. The gorge is one of the only places in the world where you will find freshwater barramundi, mussels, stingrays and prawns. Also watch out for the freshwater crocodiles. Boat tours may not be operating in the wet season months between December and March. Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge, although more difficult to get to (4WD recommended), can be comfortably explored on foot. Camping is allowed at Windjana Gorge only.
