jabiru
Jabiru is situated in the heart of Kakadu National Park, 250 km's east of
Darwin. With a population of about 1200, Jabiru was originally set up
to service the uranium mines in the area and is a good place to base yourself
if you plan on staying in Kakadu for any length of time. Jabiru has most
of the services of any modern town, with a supermarket , caravan park,
hotel, bank, health clinic with resident doctors and nursing staff and
a nine hole golf course. The Jabiru Sports and Social Club welcomes visitors
for a meal and a drink in a pleasant friendly atmosphere and at a reasonable
price. There is no take away alcohol in Jabiru, visitors must come prepared. |

nourlangie
rock
Archaeologists estimate that the ancient living shelter at Nourlangie
Rock was in use during the wet season as far back as 20,000 years ago.
People are not encouraged to climb the rock itself, but there are several
bushwalks around the rock. These will take you through open woodland savannah
where you'll be able to see birdlife, wildlife, rock art and stunning
views across the valley to the escarpment. For a great sunset view back
towards Nourlangie Rock, you can climb to the top of Nawurlandja (Little
Nourlangie), just behind Anbangbang billabong. |

ubirr
rock
Ubirr rock overlooks the East Alligator floodplains and
is one of the best spots from which to view magnificent sunset panaromas.
Traditional owners have requested that tourists do not take alcohol up
onto the rock. During the dry season, rangers give informative talks about
the area. Ubirr is also one of the better known rock art sites in Kakadu.
The "galleries" have simple, red-ochre style, as well as more recent "X-ray"
style paintings. Ubirr is not accessible during the wet season. |

jim jim falls
At Jim Jim Falls you'll find a plunge pool surrounded by sheer cliffs.
To reach the Falls there is a 4WD-only track, and a 900 metre "moderately
difficult" walk. In the dry season, the waterfall is reduced to a trickle.
It takes the wet season to transform the falls into a thunderous surge
of water cascading off the Arnhemland escarpment. The road to Jim Jim
Falls is usually closed for the wet, but you can see this spectacular
site from scenic flights, available several times a day from Cooinda and
Jabiru Airports. |

twin falls
Not far from Jim Jim Falls is Twin Falls, named because of the two cascades
of water that plunge into a pool lined with a white, sandy beach. The
falls themselves are only accessible through a magnificent gorge which
changes colour with the sun. In the wet season, Twin Falls is blasting
with water. The road is inaccessible, but you can view the spectacle from
the safety of a scenic flight. |

yellow waters
Yellow Waters is probably Kakadu's most famous wetland area. Observe
the varied wildlife from a series of board walks, or go out on the water
with a sunrise or sunset boat cruise. Apart from the abundant birdlife,
you'll very likely to see the many salt-water crocodiles that live here
