The
Red Centre of the Australian continent is in many ways its heart and soul. The
locals would probably tell you it is the brains as well, for who in their right
mind would want to live anywhere else! In the Redcentre there is a rich Aboriginal
heritage and the mesmerising landscape of the West MacDonnell Ranges form the
backdrop for the thriving settlement of Alice Springs. From here the major sights
of the region are all within a relatively comfortable day's drive, or can be
easily reached by plane. The incredible magic of Uluru (Ayers Rock) and
Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), Watarrka National Park with the beautiful Kings Canyon,
and the immensity of the Simpson Desert, will all take your breath away. But
remember in the Redcentre, temperatures can rise well above 40 degrees Celsius
in summer, so always carry plenty of water when out and about.Alice Springs
and Uluru have regular flights to and from other Australian cities. By road
Alice Springs is almost halfway along the Stuart Highway between Adelaide and
Darwin, both around 1500km away. For a novel way of covering the distance from
Adelaide ride the historic train 'The Ghan', and feel the relief in knowing
you won't have to finish the last few hundred kilometres in the same way the
earliest European settlers were compelled to - by riding a camel. |
